What is a Moonshot Anyhow?
Not as long as one might think?
The term moonshot originated with the Space Race in the 1960’s involving the US and the USSR. We use it to mean things that are a long shot from happening or far away, but I don’t think the original moonshot was moonshot enough.
This all started with President Kennedy asking for a commitment to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade.
This was in May 1961.
8 years later, man on the moon through the Apollo program.
Mission accomplished.
I see a lot of similarities with modern industry where we think things are moonshots when realistically, the Apollo program put together existing technologies and helped innovate, but they didn’t do magic. They proved we had the capabilities to go to the moon.
When people say moonshot, maybe we shouldn’t think about some far off thing. Maybe it is better to think of it as an 8 year project that could succeed given the resources where the technology has more or less progressed to the critical point.
